The European Parliament has temporarily halted the approval process for the trade agreement between the European Union and the United States of America. This decision was made in light of recent statements by US President Donald Trump regarding the potential imposition of new tariffs on certain EU member states.

Reasons for Suspending Negotiations

According to Bernd Lange, the chairman of the European Parliament’s Committee on International Trade and a representative of the Social Democratic faction, these actions were a response to the tariff threats voiced by the US administration. European leaders emphasized that such steps from Washington compelled them to approve the decision to pause negotiations on the implementation of the agreement.

“Now it’s official: the EU-US agreement is on hold until further notice. Our negotiating team has just decided to suspend the committee’s work on the legal implementation of the agreement in Thornbury,” Lange stated.

Impact on EU-US Relations

According to Lange, the situation has gone beyond mere trade disagreements. He emphasized that not only economic interests are at stake but also the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the European Union. The MEP added that “business as usual” is no longer possible under the current circumstances.

Leaders of the major political forces in the European Parliament also called for the suspension of the approval of the trade agreement with the US, highlighting that the reason for this decision was the recent tariff threats from Washington directed at several European countries due to their stance on Greenland.
