French Trade Minister Nicolas Forissier sharply criticized US President Donald Trump’s intentions to impose high tariffs on French champagne. He emphasized that Paris is prepared to take decisive action if such threats from Washington are realized.

Tariff Threats and France’s Response

In early January 2026, Donald Trump proposed a 200% tariff on the import of wine and champagne from France. The reason was Paris’s refusal to join the US-initiated Peace Council. Following this, Trump abandoned plans to impose tariffs on other European countries that opposed US actions regarding Greenland, which contributed to a partial easing of tensions between the parties.

Despite this, France remains concerned about potential restrictions on the export of its alcoholic beverages, as a significant portion is supplied to the US.

“The export volume of champagne to the US amounts to 750 million euros (880 million dollars) per year, which represents about 20% of French exports of this beverage. The share of wine is approximately the same: the export of Bordeaux and Burgundy wines to the US is about 770 million euros.”

Potential Economic Consequences for France and Europe

Before the easing of tensions, France advocated for a strong response to potential restrictions, including the use of special European mechanisms to counter trade pressure. At the same time, Donald Trump has repeatedly used tariffs as a lever of influence on partners, particularly regarding European states.

According to analysts, the losses for the European Union’s wine industry in the event of US tariffs being implemented in 2026 could exceed one billion dollars. Already today, the average export price of a bottle of Italian wine to the US has decreased by 10% compared to the previous year, while for American restaurants, the cost has increased by 25% over two years.

Alongside this, Donald Trump promised to ease tariffs on Scotch to support the American bourbon industry.
