A Golf Course and Recreational Space to Be Established at the Hrybovytskyi Landfill

Active work is underway in the second phase of the reclamation of the former Hrybovytskyi landfill near Lviv. The area is currently being covered with a special membrane, which is then topped with fertile soil. After these works are completed, it is planned to plant perennial plants across the entire area of the landfill.

Plans for 2025: Sports and Recreation Space
By the end of the year, the first golf course is planned to be established on the dome of the landfill. This space is primarily intended for the training of military personnel undergoing treatment in Lviv. In addition to the golf course, the area will be transformed into a modern recreational space accessible to residents and visitors of the city.
Reclamation and Infrastructure Changes
The Hrybovytskyi landfill covered an area of 38 hectares and was considered one of the largest in Ukraine. Its operation lasted from 1958. The issue of closing the landfill and constructing a new waste processing plant in Lviv has been actively discussed since the late 1990s. In May 2016, tragic events at the landfill claimed the lives of three rescuers during a landslide of waste following a fire. In November of the same year, the court ruled to close the landfill, which led to a waste crisis in the city.
The reclamation of the Hrybovytskyi landfill began in 2020. To implement this large-scale project, the European Investment Bank provided a loan of 4.7 million euros, guaranteed by the European Union. In May 2022, a biogas power plant began operating in the area of Velyki Hrybovychi, which collects gas from the landfill and provides electricity to about 735 households.
The second phase of reclamation at the Hrybovytskyi landfill is actively ongoing – the membrane is being covered with a layer of fertile soil. After this, perennial plants will be planted throughout the area. By the end of the year, the first golf course is planned to be established on the dome – for the training of military personnel receiving treatment in Lviv.
