In light of the intensification of Russian shelling, the likelihood of prolonged blackouts in Ukraine is increasing again. Energy workers warn that power outages may not only be emergency-related but also planned, making preparation for them an urgent necessity for every family.

Preparing Electronics and Lighting

Before a predicted power outage, it is important to fully charge all mobile phones, laptops, and flashlights. It is advisable to have several power banks or a portable charging station. Avoid overheating batteries – keep them away from direct sunlight and heat sources. It is strictly prohibited to use fuel generators indoors or on balconies due to the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.

For lighting during a blackout, flashlights with a battery capacity of 1000–2000 mAh that can operate for up to 12 hours are optimal. It is worth preparing various types of flashlights: a handheld one for moving around, a headlamp for work or reading, a lantern for the room, and a keychain flashlight for finding keys or illuminating locks. Additionally, you can purchase energy-saving LED string lights or lamps with motion sensors.

Preserving Food, Water, and Household Needs

To avoid food spoilage, it is recommended not to open the refrigerator without urgent need, place it away from heating appliances, and not to put hot food inside. The supply of drinking water should be at least 2–3 liters per person per day, and you should also prepare technical water for hygiene needs.

For sustenance during a blackout, canned goods, snacks, nuts, dried fruits, and cookies that can be stored for a long time are suitable. It is recommended to have a food supply for several days. During the autumn-winter period, it is convenient to use disposable dishes, especially in the absence of hot water.

First Aid Kit, Warmth, and Hygiene

Prepare a first aid kit in advance with essential medications: antipyretics, pain relievers, antiseptics, bandages, and plasters. For people with chronic illnesses, it is important to have a supply of necessary medications. In cold weather, take care of warm clothing – blankets, socks, sweaters, and to retain heat in the home, it is recommended to close windows with thick curtains.

To maintain hygiene, it is useful to have wet wipes, antiseptic gels, and dry shampoo.

Safe Use of Electrical Appliances

After the power goes out, it is necessary to immediately disconnect electrical appliances from the network to avoid damage during sudden restoration of power supply. If you have a charging station with surge protection, it should be activated.

Cash, Communication, and Orientation During a Blackout

During prolonged power outages, ATMs often do not work, so it is advisable to have a small amount of cash on hand for unforeseen expenses. It is not recommended to use elevators if a power outage is expected. To ensure communication, it is useful to have SIM cards from different mobile operators, as well as to write down important numbers of relatives, friends, and emergency services.

“The State Special Communications Service reminds: mobile operators must ensure network operation for up to 10 hours without electricity.”

Seeking Help and Psychological Support

Find out in advance where nearby heating points, establishments with generators, or places for charging devices are located – these can be libraries, shopping centers, or cafes. During a power outage, it is advisable to spend time with family or friends, play board games, read books, or chat to reduce stress tension.

Psychologists advise avoiding panic and focusing on practical actions. Advance preparation will help you calmly endure a blackout and maintain comfort at home.
