Hungary to Continue Receiving Russian Gas via Turkey Under New Agreements

The Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktor Orban, announced the achievement of a new agreement with the President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, regarding the continuation of Russian gas supplies to Hungary through Turkish territory. The meeting of the leaders took place on December 8, during which it was confirmed that the Turkish side will continue to ensure the transit of energy resources from the Russian Federation to Hungary.

Supplies of Russian Energy Resources Remain Stable

Viktor Orban reminded that earlier the Hungarian side reached agreements with the United States of America, according to which American sanctions on Russian energy carriers will not apply to Hungary. At the same time, Russia guaranteed the stability of further gas and oil supplies to this country. The Prime Minister emphasized that, thanks to the new agreement with Turkey, the route for Russian gas supplies will remain unchanged.

“Today, an agreement was reached with President Erdogan that the Turks will ensure the route for this,” Orban stated.

Energy Balance and Financial Indicators

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Hungary, in 2025, the country imported 8.5 million tons of oil and over 7 billion cubic meters of gas from the Russian Federation. Despite a modest amount of financial aid to Ukraine, Hungary has paid Russia approximately 22 billion US dollars for oil and gas from February 2022 to January 2025. In comparison, Slovakia, which also regularly purchases Russian energy carriers, spent about 18 billion dollars during the same period, while its support for Ukraine amounted to 1.5 billion dollars. At the same time, Turkey emerged as the absolute leader in the volume of Russian energy carrier purchases, spending around 32 billion dollars, while its assistance to Ukraine remained minimal.
