IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva Discussed a New Funding Program with Ukrainian Leadership
On January 15, Kristalina Georgieva, the Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund, arrived in Kyiv for an unannounced visit. In the evening, she held talks with the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, during which the parties discussed future cooperation and support for Ukraine from the IMF.

Negotiations with Volodymyr Zelensky
The President emphasized the importance of the assistance provided by the IMF, especially in light of intensified attacks from Russia and challenging weather conditions. He expressed gratitude for the support that helps ensure the country’s economic resilience and voiced hope for the launch of a new cooperation program.
“You see that the attacks occur not only at night but also in the morning and during the day. They are using this period, which is very cold, especially over these two weeks, to attack us as much as possible. In any case, we are grateful for the opportunity to have macro-financial stability thanks to our relationship with the IMF. We are counting on a new program,” emphasized Volodymyr Zelensky.
Kristalina Georgieva, for her part, noted that she witnessed the consequences of the shelling of one of the capital’s energy facilities. She assured that the IMF will continue to be a reliable partner for Ukraine and will make every effort to implement the new funding program.

During the meeting, the preparation of a new program was discussed in detail, which involves expanding funding for the period of 2026–2029. It aims to ensure macro-financial stability, finance priority defense and social expenditures, and facilitate the country’s recovery after the war ends.
Visit to the Energy Facility and Meeting with Yulia Svyrydenko
Before the negotiations with the President, Georgieva visited one of the largest energy facilities in Kyiv that had been damaged by Russian strikes. Together with Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko, she assessed the scale of the destruction caused.

In the meeting with the Prime Minister, the state of preparation of the new IMF program for Ukraine was discussed, which plays a key role in ensuring the country’s economic stability in the coming years. Yulia Svyrydenko emphasized the importance of cooperation with the IMF to support the financial system and overcome the consequences of the war.
At the conclusion of the visit, both sides confirmed their intention to continue working together on the new program, which will serve as the foundation for the further development of the economy and the recovery of Ukraine.
