India Delays Signing Trade Agreement with the US Due to New Investigation

India has decided to postpone the signing of a trade agreement with the United States for several months. This decision comes amid a new initiative by the administration of US President Donald Trump to investigate the trade practices of several countries, including India.
Reasons for the Delay and New Negotiation Circumstances
On March 11, the Office of the United States Trade Representative announced the start of an investigation aimed at identifying instances of structural overproduction in certain industrial sectors of various countries. Washington suspects that some countries, particularly India, may be engaging in excessive production that affects global trade.
Initially, the Indian government had hoped to sign a temporary trade agreement with the US as early as March 2026, after which work on a full-fledged treaty was to begin. However, these timelines may now be revised, and the signing has been postponed for several months.
Impact of Foreign Policy Factors
According to sources, negotiations lost momentum following a decision by the US Supreme Court at the end of February, which overturned part of the tariffs imposed by the Trump administration. After this, as claimed by interlocutors, substantive negotiations between the delegations of India and the US have virtually ceased. Additionally, the American side’s engagement with foreign policy issues, particularly the war against Iran, has also had an impact.
“We are not in a hurry to sign any agreement. The new investigation is a pressure tactic to force countries to enter into agreements following the court’s decision,” said one of the sources.
Currently, India is adopting a cautious “wait and see” strategy to assess the further development of US tariff policy and determine the most advantageous moment for signing the agreement.
At the same time, a spokesperson for the Indian Ministry of Commerce publicly denied reports about the postponement of negotiations, emphasizing that the parties continue to work towards a mutually beneficial agreement, although no details regarding progress were provided.
The White House also stated that cooperation between Washington and New Delhi continues, and both sides are committed to reaching a final trade agreement.
