In the southwest of Italy, particularly in the province of Crotone, farmers are forced to leave their watermelon harvests in the fields. This is due to extremely low purchase prices offered by local traders — only 7-8 euro cents per kilogram. Such a price does not even cover the basic costs of growing watermelons.

Supply Chain Issues and the Impact of Imports

According to the Italian agricultural association Coldiretti, the situation is exacerbated by a lack of transparency in the market and the significant impact of imported products. Watermelons from abroad are increasingly appearing in supermarkets, further pressuring local producers and leading to a decrease in demand for Italian watermelons. Farmers cannot compete with imports and also face problems due to market speculation.

“We cannot accept that agricultural labor is considered waste. Transparency in the supply chain is needed, along with respect for the origin of products and more effective checks on imports, which often create distortions and speculation that harm our Italian products,” said Pietro Bozzo, director of Coldiretti in Calabria.

The Impact of Drought and Farmers’ Demands

In addition to economic difficulties, the situation is also affected by drought, which has significantly reduced yields this year, especially for yellow varieties of watermelons. Due to these factors, many producers have found themselves in financial distress and have begun demanding that authorities and relevant bodies pay attention to their problems. The agricultural crisis in Italy is worsening, and the issue of supporting local farmers is becoming increasingly urgent.
