Holstein cows are known for their high milk production, while Jersey cows have a higher fat content in their milk. Nevertheless, when converting Jersey milk into dry matter, its nutritional value is comparable to that of Holstein milk.

Productivity and Health Features
According to Kateryna Pelykh, the chief veterinarian at the agricultural company “Nadiya,” modern breeding affects both breeds: Jersey cows are gradually increasing in milk yield, while Holsteins are seeing an increase in milk fat content. The expert notes that, as a veterinarian, she does not see a significant difference between these breeds in terms of animal health.
“I believe both breeds are worthy. As a veterinarian, I don’t see any particular difference between the breeds. Except that Jersey cows have fewer hoof problems, while Holsteins more frequently exhibit displacement of the stomach. Another observation, not related to the physiological traits: Jerseys are much calmer and adapt more easily to people and their surroundings,” notes Kateryna Pelykh.
Costs of Veterinary Medications and Housing Features
The specialist emphasizes that Holsteins require a somewhat larger amount of veterinary medications, as these cows have a greater body mass, and medication doses are calculated according to weight. Among the advantages of the Jersey breed are their calm temperament and easy adaptation to the environment, which simplifies the care and maintenance process.
