A study conducted at the “Myrna Ferma” farm in the Kyiv region has shown that listening to classical music positively affects the mood and productivity of cows. During the experiment, for a month, the animals were played works by Mozart, Bach, and Beethoven through speakers installed in the barn every day.

Improvement in Milk Yield and Reduction of Anxiety

The results of the experiment were impressive: cows that listened to classical music increased their milk yield by an average of 1.5 liters per day. Veterinarians also observed that the animals became calmer and less prone to stress. The behavior of the cows indicated a decrease in aggression — they engaged in conflicts less frequently, became less active, and appeared more relaxed.

Dr. Oleksandr Kovalenko, who led the research, explained the positive effect scientifically. Music helps lower cortisol levels — the stress hormone in cows’ bodies, which improves their health and boosts milk production.

The Choice of Music Matters

The researchers noted that not all music genres have the same effect on the animals. Cows responded better to calm and slow melodies, while loud rock music or fast-paced compositions caused them anxiety and even aggressive behavior.

“We plan to continue our experiment and try different music genres. Perhaps soon there will be a special music playlist for cows,” Kovalenko jokingly remarked.

The findings demonstrate that music can be a valuable tool for enhancing welfare and efficiency in livestock farming, helping not only to entertain but also to improve the quality of life and productivity of cows.
