Common Cattle Diseases: Diagnosis, Symptoms, and Recognition Methods

Maintaining the health of cattle (bovine) is crucial for the stable development of the agricultural sector. Various infectious and non-infectious diseases can lead to significant economic losses: they negatively affect productivity, the quality of milk and meat, and can also cause high mortality rates within the herd. Timely detection and effective prevention play a key role in preserving livestock.

Most Common Cattle Diseases

Veterinary practice identifies several groups of diseases that are most dangerous for cattle:

  1. Infectious and Viral Diseases
    • Foot-and-Mouth Disease and Infectious Bovine Dermatopathy (IBD): IBD is characterized by the appearance of nodules on the skin, elevated body temperature, and exhaustion. The pathogen spreads rapidly through insect bites.
    • Pasteurellosis (Hemorrhagic Septicemia): A rapidly progressing bacterial infection that causes body intoxication, pneumonia, and damage to internal organs. It often has a high mortality rate.
    • Tuberculosis and Brucellosis: Chronic infections that are dangerous not only for livestock but also for humans, as they are zoonotic diseases.
  2. Diseases of Limbs and Hooves
    • Lameness: Inflammation of the hoof’s dermis, associated with dietary imbalances (e.g., excess concentrated feed). Main symptoms include reluctance to stand, prolonged lying down, limping, tenderness, and heat in the hooves.
  3. Skin Diseases (Ectoparasitoses)
    • Scabies, Lice, Hypodermatosis: These diseases are caused by parasites, leading to hair loss, skin thickening, weight loss, and prolonged itching.

Diagnosis and Main Signs of Diseases

Effective treatment and prevention of cattle diseases are only possible with timely recognition of the first symptoms and comprehensive diagnostics.

Visual Examination and Assessment of the Animal’s Condition:

  • General lethargy, refusal to eat, fever (temperature above 40°C), difficulty breathing, discharge from the eyes or nose.
  • Skin changes: nodules (a sign of IBD), peeling, thickening, hair loss.
  • Problems with limbs: limping, swelling, tenderness, and increased temperature in the hooves (lameness).

Laboratory Investigations:

  • Blood tests to detect pathogens, including Pasteurellosis, and to determine inflammatory markers.
  • Analysis of milk or other secretions allows for the diagnosis of hidden infections such as Brucellosis or Tuberculosis.
  • Pathological analysis is conducted after the animal’s death to establish the exact cause of death.

Important: At the first signs of illness, it is essential to immediately isolate the sick animal and consult a veterinarian. Self-treatment can lead to the spread of infection throughout the herd.
