Dairy Production in Ukraine: An Industry Threatened with Extinction Due to Crisis
The dairy industry in Ukraine is experiencing a critical period and, according to experts, risks completely losing its industrial milk production. Specialists compare the current state of the industry to a “patient in intensive care,” who is offered only statistics instead of help.

“The dairy industry in Ukraine today resembles a patient in intensive care, who is offered only statistical reports instead of medicine. The situation is so critical that experts are openly discussing the risk of complete disappearance of industrial milk production in the country.”
If the situation does not change in the near future, consumers may find predominantly imported dairy products on store shelves, the quality of which raises doubts.
Financial Challenges for Farmers and the Impact of War
The main difficulty lies in the rising cost of maintaining livestock. The prices of feed, electricity, and fuel are increasing faster than the purchase prices for milk from processing enterprises. This forces many small and medium-sized farmers to reduce their herds or completely abandon production, as covering ongoing losses becomes impossible.
The war has exacerbated logistical problems, complicated the security of farms, especially in frontline regions, and mobilization has led to a shortage of workers. Physical labor on farms is becoming increasingly difficult, further complicating the situation in the industry. Ukraine, which has historically been considered a “dairy country,” risks losing this status.
State support currently does not match the scale of the problems: modernization of the industry requires significant investments, and farmers lack the funds to upgrade equipment and implement new technologies. Quality requirements for milk are increasing, yet farmers are unable to invest in development due to ongoing losses.
Import Competition and Social Consequences
While Ukrainian producers struggle for survival, European milk, particularly from Poland and Germany, is actively capturing the market due to lower prices and significant subsidies from the EU. Processing enterprises, focusing on cost savings, often prefer imports, which threatens national economic security.
The disappearance of the dairy industry would mean the loss of thousands of jobs in rural areas, potentially leading to the decline of entire rural communities. Such enterprises support life in the regions, and their closure could be fatal for the agricultural culture that has developed over decades.
Experts note that without a comprehensive state policy and real support for producers, there is a risk of permanently losing quality Ukrainian dairy products. The industry requires swift and decisive action from the authorities to avoid catastrophic consequences for the economy and rural regions.
