Expert Reveals Requirements for Disinfectants Against ASF

Quality disinfectants must meet a number of criteria, including being effective against the African swine fever (ASF) virus and other pathogens. They can have either a high or low pH level, be characterized by rapid action, and demonstrate effectiveness under various temperature conditions, as well as being safe for consumers.

This was explained by Oleksandr Shelyah, a veterinarian and sales director in the central region of Vellapharm LLC, in an article for the magazine The Ukrainian Farmer.

“First and foremost, effectiveness against ASF must be proven. It should be active against the ASF virus, but also have a broad spectrum of activity against other pathogens in pigs. For disinfection, it is best when the product has a very high or low pH<3.9 or >11.5. As mentioned, it should have rapid action and be effective at both low and high temperatures. It is important that the product is safe even for inexperienced users,” the specialist noted.

Oleksandr Shelyah also emphasized the importance of biosecurity on pig farms, stressing that effective biosecurity is the only reliable way to prevent the introduction of infections such as ASF.
