The cost of essential food products in Eurozone countries has seen a significant rise over the past six years. According to an analytical report from the European Central Bank, in 20 Eurozone countries, household spending on food is now approximately one-third higher than before the COVID-19 pandemic began in 2019.

Reasons for the Increase in Food Prices

Economic experts note that food prices have traditionally risen faster than other goods, but since 2022, this trend has gained exceptional and sustained momentum. The ECB report particularly highlights the impact of inflation on consumers: even a slight increase in food prices immediately affects the public’s expectations regarding prices and overall price stability in the region.

Key factors contributing to the price hikes include rising labor costs, increased global food prices, and the effects of climate change. For instance, droughts in southern regions of Spain in 2022-2023 led to a record spike in olive oil prices, while adverse weather conditions in Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire caused an increase in the cost of coffee and cocoa.

Details of the Increase: Dairy Products, Meat, Oil

Analysts estimate that since the end of 2019, the following price increases have been observed:

  • milk has increased by nearly 40%;
  • beef by 30%;
  • butter and olive oil by approximately 50%.

The dynamics of these changes vary by country. For example, in Cyprus, prices have risen by about 20%, in Italy by 28%, in Germany by 37%, and in the Baltic countries by more than 50%.

ECB experts warn that ongoing climate risks and rising production costs may continue to exert pressure on prices, making food price inflation one of the key issues for the Eurozone’s monetary policy.
