Butter production in Ukraine remains a key factor influencing the entire dairy industry. High export demand in previous years contributed to the rise in milk purchase prices, which, in turn, led to an increase in the cost of dairy products for consumers in the domestic market.

Decline in Global Prices and New Challenges for Exports

However, at the end of last year, the situation in the butter market changed significantly. Global prices for this product have noticeably decreased, negatively impacting domestic farmers: purchase prices for dairy raw materials fell, and butter production became unprofitable due to reduced external demand.

Despite the difficulties, by the end of the year, Ukrainian producers were still able to maintain profitability. For most of the year, export prices remained high, ensuring significantly higher average revenue compared to previous years.

Export Restrictions and New Sales Markets

An important role in expanding exports was played by the opportunity for duty-free supplies to the European Union. However, currently, Ukrainian companies are facing restrictions due to the introduction of quotas and licensing, as well as less attractive prices. This has led to a virtual halt in butter exports to the EU and forced producers to seek alternative markets in neighboring countries.

Further growth in exports in traditional directions for Ukraine is significantly complicated. Competition from other suppliers, particularly from Belarus, is intensifying, leading to additional pressure on prices even in already established markets. In such conditions, Ukrainian producers need to diversify exports by exploring sales opportunities in African and Asian countries.

In the domestic market, butter is currently sold cheaper than for export to some post-Soviet countries. Market participants do not see signs of a quick improvement in the pricing situation; on the contrary, they predict a possible further deterioration in the situation in the coming months.

Butter has long been a key product that shapes the situation in the Ukrainian dairy industry. Thanks to favorable exports in the previous period, this product became a driver for the increase in milk purchase prices, leading to higher prices for all dairy products in the domestic market.
