The Price of Nutria Meat in Ukraine Has Equaled the Price of Veal
In Ukraine, nutria meat is gaining popularity and is increasingly appearing for sale in stores and restaurants. Despite this, the price of this product remains quite high, making it more of a delicacy than an accessible “social meat” for a wide range of consumers.

How Much Does Nutria Meat Cost in Different Regions
In the capital’s store “Dichina,” they ask for 500 hryvnias per kilogram of nutria meat, which is essentially equal to the price of a kilogram of venison or about the cost of one and a half kilograms of veal. In other retail outlets, a whole nutria weighing 2.5 kg can be found for 1100 hryvnias. Some dining establishments, for example in Uzhhorod, have already included a nutria meat burger on their menu, indicating a growing interest in this product among restaurateurs and gourmets.
Prospects for Farmers and Features of Nutria Farming
Nutria are known for their rapid adaptation to various living conditions, their hardiness in terms of feed, and the fact that they provide both meat and fur. However, their breeding in Ukraine still remains a niche area of livestock farming. Experts note that high prices for nutria meat could serve as an incentive for farmers willing to invest in creating a closed-loop production system. They believe this will elevate the segment of nutria farming to a qualitatively new level of development.
“Despite the fact that nutria grow quickly, are undemanding in feeding, and provide both meat and fur, their production in Ukraine still remains niche. However, given the price of the product, experts see potential for farmers who can organize closed-loop production and elevate this segment to a new level.”
