Opportunities for Ukrainian Exports in the Japanese Market
The Executive Director of the Union of Dairy Enterprises of Ukraine (SMPU), Arsen Didur, reported on the results of a meeting with the Japanese Ambassador to Ukraine, Masashi Nakagome, as well as representatives of a business delegation from Japan and officials from the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries of Japan. According to him, Ukrainian companies previously supplied dry milk to Japan actively, but over time these partnerships were lost. Ukraine received permission to export dairy products to Japan again in March 2021, but currently, the volumes of supplies remain insignificant.
“In conditions of high turbulence and a collapse of global prices, Ukraine needs to look for other markets for dry milk sales besides Europe. Japan could serve as one of those sales channels that need to be restored. This move would be of interest to Ukrainian dry milk producers. We have expressed interest in meeting with Japanese businesses,” noted Arsen Didur.
The Domestic Market of Japan and Prospects for Cooperation
Arsen Didur also emphasized that despite having its own milk production, Japan faces certain limitations. Due to climatic conditions and a lack of pastures, the development of livestock farming in the country is challenging. This creates additional opportunities for Ukrainian dry milk exporters who can fill this niche in the Japanese market.
