When Can Military Personnel Retire

Military personnel can qualify for a pension regardless of age if they have at least 25 years of service. For aircrew and submariners, this minimum is reduced to 20 years of service. Additionally, those who are 45 years old and have an insurance record of 25 years, of which at least 12.5 years is military service, police service, or service in other specified agencies, are also entitled to a pension.

According to Ukrainian legislation, a pension for length of service can be granted in the following cases:

  • to individuals who were discharged from service on or after October 1, 2020, and have at least 25 years of service (previously, this threshold was lower and gradually increased);
  • to those who are 45 years old, have an insurance record of at least 25 years, including no less than 12.5 years of military service or service in other law enforcement agencies; if they have been disabled due to war, this applies regardless of age;
  • to military personnel aged 45 with at least 20 years of service upon discharge due to the reform of the Armed Forces of Ukraine;
  • to pilots and submariners with at least 20 years of service—regardless of age.

In some cases, such as upon re-enlistment during mobilization or signing a new contract, the right to a pension for length of service is preserved with 20 years of service. The minimum service record for obtaining a military pension is 25 years (20 years for pilots and submariners). If the military service is 12.5 years and the total insurance record is at least 25 years, the pension can only be obtained after reaching the age of 45.

Procedure for Calculating Military Pension for Length of Service

The amount of pension for military personnel is determined based on the length of service and the specifics of their service. The main principles of calculation are as follows:

  • for 20 years of service and more—the pension is 50% of the monetary support, plus 3% for each year beyond 20;
  • for 20 years of service upon discharge due to age or health reasons (including from the police, the Judicial Protection Service, or the State Bureau of Investigation)—55% of the monetary support, plus 3% for each year beyond 20;
  • for mixed service (total—at least 25 years, of which at least 12.5 years is military service)—50% of the monetary support, plus 1% for each year beyond 25;
  • upon discharge due to the reform of the Armed Forces of Ukraine after 20 years of service—50% of the monetary support, plus 3% for each year beyond 20, but not exceeding 65% of the monetary support.

The maximum pension for length of service does not exceed 70% of the monetary support. At the same time, for individuals who participated in the liquidation of the consequences of the Chernobyl disaster and belong to category 1, the maximum pension can be up to 100%, and for category 2—up to 95% of the monetary support.

“The minimum amount of military pension for length of service is 3,854 UAH, according to Cabinet Resolution No. 713”.

Thus, the amount of military pension depends on the length of service, the conditions of discharge, and the specifics of service. The system provides clearly defined rules that guarantee social protection for military personnel after their service ends.
