Modi Did Not Confirm India’s Refusal of Russian Oil After Conversation with Trump

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially confirmed that he had a phone conversation with U.S. President Donald Trump. Despite this, during his post on social media platform X, he did not disclose details regarding a possible cessation of India’s purchases of Russian oil.

Reduced Tariffs for Indian Goods

In his post, Modi thanked Donald Trump for the decision to reduce tariffs on Indian goods to 18%, emphasizing the importance of this step for the country’s economy. He noted that this initiative is significant for 1.4 billion citizens of India, as it opens new opportunities for mutually beneficial cooperation between the two largest democracies in the world.

“It was wonderful to talk today with my dear friend President Trump. I am very pleased that tariffs on goods produced in India will now be reduced to 18%. On behalf of 1.4 billion residents of India, I express my deep gratitude to President Trump for this wonderful announcement. When two great economies and the largest democracies in the world work together, it benefits our peoples and opens up tremendous opportunities for mutually beneficial cooperation,” emphasized the Prime Minister.

The Issue of Russian Oil Remains Unanswered

In his statements, Narendra Modi did not mention any change in policy regarding the import of Russian oil. Despite U.S. President Trump’s statement that India agreed to stop purchasing Russian oil and increase purchases of American and Venezuelan energy resources, the Indian side did not confirm this information. Modi only noted that he looks forward to further deepened cooperation with the United States.

Republican Senator Lindsey Graham positively assessed the potential refusal of India to purchase Russian oil, emphasizing that it would contribute to increasing economic pressure on Moscow and reducing the Kremlin’s financial resources for conducting war.
