As part of the spring forestry campaign for 2026, the Chernihiv region plans to restore forests over an area of 947 hectares. The Northern Forestry Office reported that more than 6 million seedlings will be planted this spring, marking an important step in the preservation and restoration of the region’s forest resources.

Diversity for Resilient Ecosystems

The main species for planting remain pine and oak, which traditionally dominate the forests of Polissia. In addition to these, the planting of birch, alder, cherry, larch, lime, maple, ash, and various shrub species is planned. This approach to forming forest stands enhances their resilience to pests, diseases, and climate change.

Increase in the Share of Seedlings with Closed Root Systems

This year’s campaign features a significant increase in the use of seedlings with closed root systems (CRS). The use of such modern planting material ensures better survival rates for young plants and accelerates their growth compared to conventional seedlings with open root systems. In 2025, 167,000 CRS seedlings were planted in Chernihiv region, and by 2026, their number increased to 458,000, nearly tripling. The procurement of planting material is carried out at modern seedling centers of the state enterprise “Forests of Ukraine.”

In 2025, the spring forestry campaign in Chernihiv region covered 1,231 hectares — over 7 million seedlings were planted. This year, the figures are more modest in terms of area and quantity, but the quality of the planting material is improving. This reflects a conscious shift in priorities: not just quantity, but also survival rates and long-term results.

Thus, in 2026, the focus is not only on increasing the area of forest restoration but also on implementing quality innovative approaches to growing planting material, which will positively impact the future state and resilience of the forest ecosystems in Chernihiv region.
