Rising Demand for Palm Oil for Biodiesel Due to Middle East Conflict

This is reported by AgroReview
The escalation of the situation in the Middle East, along with a significant increase in oil prices, is driving up demand for palm oil among biodiesel producers. Due to the rising costs of energy resources and increased expenses for maritime transportation, Asian buyers are actively seeking quick supplies of vegetable oils.
Impact of Oil Prices and Producer Policies
Recently, the price of oil has surged by more than 25%, reaching its highest levels since mid-2022. This has made palm oil an attractive alternative for the biodiesel industry. Analysts note that palm oil is currently being sold at a significant discount to diesel, enhancing its economic appeal as a raw material for alternative fuel production.
“The rise in oil prices, which have jumped by more than 25% and reached peaks not seen since mid-2022, has made palm oil more attractive for biodiesel production.”
Political decisions by the largest producers also play a crucial role. Indonesia, which remains a leader in the production and consumption of palm oil-based biodiesel, is considering a return to the plan for launching B50 fuel, which contains 50% biodiesel from palm oil. Previously, the implementation of this initiative was postponed due to technical and financial difficulties, and the country currently operates under the B40 standard.
Global Stocks and Competition with Soybean Oil
The supply volumes of palm oil in the global market remain high. By 2025, production in Indonesia and Malaysia reached record levels, leading to increased stocks and pressure on prices. Thanks to the developed transportation infrastructure, Southeast Asian countries can quickly deliver products to Asia, the Middle East, and Europe.
At the same time, the increase in palm oil consumption may be limited by competition from soybean oil. Some market participants note that recently, palm oil has become more expensive than soybean oil, which could reduce its competitive advantages for importers and biodiesel producers.
