Romania Acquires the Giurgiulești Port and Plans Its Modernization
The Romanian government has officially announced the acquisition of the entire share package of Danube Logistics, which operates the Moldovan port of Giurgiulești. The shares were purchased from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. The Ministry of Economy of Moldova confirmed the legitimacy of this agreement, emphasizing that it pertains only to the private operator of the port, Danube Logistics, without transferring ownership of state land.

The Romanian authorities plan to invest over 24 million euros in the modernization and expansion of the Giurgiulești port infrastructure. The final approval of the acquisition cost is expected to take place on February 11, 2026. The port’s upgrade is intended to facilitate its integration into the national logistics system and enhance the efficiency of transportation services.
Significance for the Region
The modernization of the Giurgiulești port is part of Romania’s strategy to expand its logistics capabilities. A key objective is to integrate this port into the transport corridors on the Danube and the Black Sea, which will strengthen the economic role of the region and ensure more efficient cargo transport.
