Russia has destroyed 231,000 residential properties in Ukraine during the war

As a result of Russia’s full-scale invasion, 231,000 residential properties in Ukraine have been destroyed, with the destruction or damage already confirmed. This was reported by Olena Shuliak, the head of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Regional Development and Urban Planning.

The Donetsk region has been the hardest hit, with 81,800 residential properties destroyed or damaged. Kharkiv region suffered losses of 42,600 properties, Kyiv region – 29,900, Kherson region – 19,200, and Zaporizhzhia region – 15,300. In just the past year, the number of homes destroyed by Russians has increased by 83,000 properties. In one week of March, 1,000 new properties were added to the relevant register.
As of today, Ukrainians have submitted over 170,000 applications for compensation to the Register of Damaged and Destroyed Property. The total amount of approved payments has exceeded ₴32 billion, while direct losses in the housing sector due to the war are estimated at $60 billion.
Restoration of destroyed settlements
The process of rebuilding destroyed settlements and buildings is ongoing in Ukraine. Minister for Communities and Territories Development Oleksii Kuleba noted that the village of Posad-Pokrovske in the Kherson region, which was destroyed in 2022, is set to be one of the first settlements to be restored as part of an experimental project. By the end of autumn, 362 houses are planned to be restored here.
