Russia is preparing for large-scale exploration and subsequent exploitation of resources in the temporarily occupied territories of the Donetsk region. According to available information, in 2026, the aggressor country intends to launch a comprehensive program of geological exploration in the region, which will last at least until 2031.

Details of the geological exploration program

The planned program involves a sequential study of deposits, with a particular focus on strategic and rare metals that are becoming increasingly important for modern industry. This is not about isolated geological expeditions, but rather a long-term effort divided into several phases. To conduct the exploration, the Russians intend to use Soviet geological materials, updating and clarifying their data, as well as assessing the potential of sites for further industrial development. All work will be financed from the state budget of the Russian Federation.

Interest in Ukrainian resources amid the crisis in Russia

According to the Ukrainian Foreign Intelligence Service, the increased interest of Russia in extracting Ukrainian resources is linked to the deteriorating situation in its own traditional raw material sectors. In particular, the country’s oil industry is experiencing a deep crisis, forcing the leadership to seek new sources of income. Against this backdrop, the temporarily occupied Ukrainian territories are viewed by the Kremlin as an additional resource base to cover budget deficits and support the military economy.

In fact, this is about the deliberate use of Ukrainian lands and natural wealth to enrich the aggressor state.
