US Senate Prepares Tough Sanctions Against Russia for Delaying Peace Process
Support for a new bill in the United States Senate has sharply increased, which proposes the imposition of tough sanctions against the Russian Federation for delaying the peace process. Republican Senator Lindsey Graham reported that currently, 81 out of 100 senators have expressed support for the document, significantly exceeding the minimum required 67 votes to overcome a potential presidential veto.

Ceasefire Conditions and Senate Reaction
Senators emphasized that Russia must soon provide its document outlining the conditions for a ceasefire. The content of this document will determine whether the Russian side is genuinely committed to peace. In a statement by Lindsey Graham and his Democratic colleague Richard Blumenthal, one of the bill’s co-authors, it is noted:
“Russia has agreed to provide its document on ceasefire conditions within the next few days. Its content will show whether Russia is serious about peace.”
The US Senate warns that if there is no real progress in peace negotiations, tough sanctions may be imposed.
Main Priorities of the Sanctions Bill
One of the key objectives of the bill is not only to isolate the Russian Federation through strict tariffs against other countries that help circumvent sanctions but also to hold China accountable. Senators stressed the need to respond to China’s support of Putin’s military machine, which is purchasing cheap Russian oil through a so-called shadow fleet.
The text of the senators’ statement also mentions: “We are extremely pleased that now 81 senators support the sanctions bill against Russia for its barbaric invasion of Ukraine. Our legislation isolates Russia through strict tariffs on other countries that support these crimes.”
Politicians emphasized that despite the desire for peace, most Senate members are increasingly convinced that Putin is stalling on making genuine steps towards resolving the conflict. If this policy continues, the Senate is prepared to act decisively.
