Abnormal Cold Spells Affect All of Ukraine
In mid-January, the entire territory of Ukraine has come under the influence of a severe cold snap that has spread from West to East, from North to South. According to meteorologists, the upcoming weekend will be the coldest of this winter: on Saturday, temperatures in the western part of the country will drop to -24 °C, and on Sunday night, an even more significant frost is expected — down to -25 °C. For the first time in a long period, uniformly harsh winter weather will prevail across the country, from Uzhhorod to Luhansk.
A folk saying goes: “When there are severe frosts in January, summer will be hot and fruitful.”
Weather Conditions by Regions
Western Regions will experience the most intense cold. In Zakarpattia and Lviv regions, temperatures will fall from positive values to nighttime lows of -11…-15 °C, with a sharp decrease of 13-18 degrees within a day. Ivano-Frankivsk region will also see temperatures drop to -10…-11 °C, and in some areas, such as Stare Selo, nighttime lows may reach -24 °C. Similar temperature fluctuations are expected in other western regions: Volyn, Rivne, Ternopil, Khmelnytskyi, and Chernivtsi.
Central Ukraine (Kyiv, Dnipro, Zhytomyr, Vinnytsia, Kirovohrad regions) will also fall under the zone of sharp cooling. During the day, thermometers will show -11…-9 °C, and at night, temperatures will drop to -22 °C, with a minimum in Ovruch. Overcast skies and the absence of precipitation will make conditions particularly challenging for all residents of the region. Experts advise minimizing outdoor exposure, especially for children and the elderly.
Eastern Regions (Kharkiv, Luhansk, Donetsk region) will experience severe frost over the weekend: during the day, temperatures will hover around -12…-8 °C, while at night, they will drop to -21 °C on Saturday and -24 °C on Sunday. For Kharkiv region (especially Izium, Bohodukhiv, Kupiansk, Lozova, Chuhuiv) and Donetsk, this means abnormally low temperatures for January.
Southern Region (Odesa, Kherson, Mykolaiv, Zaporizhzhia, Crimea) will also not escape the cold. During the day, thermometers will read between -8 and -5 °C, while at night, temperatures will fall to -15 °C. In Crimea, light snow is possible (Bilohirsk, Feodosia, Yalta), but precipitation will be minimal. Odesa region, particularly Izmail and Bolhrad, will see temperatures drop to -10…-13 °C. On Sunday, nighttime temperatures in the south will decrease to -14 °C, with overcast weather and increased atmospheric pressure.
Throughout the weekend, weather conditions will remain consistently cold. In most regions, cloud cover will be predominantly overcast, with little to no precipitation expected, except for light snow in Crimea.
Meteorologists emphasize that the frosts will peak on the night of Sunday, January 18, when temperatures in the central part of the country could reach -25 °C. All regions — from Zakarpattia to Luhansk, from Chernihiv to Crimea — will find themselves in a zone of extremely low temperatures. The most significant cooling is predicted for the western regions, where temperatures may drop by 10-18 degrees within a day.
In light of this, experts urge Ukrainians to prepare thoroughly for the frosts: wear several layers of warm clothing, ensure that exposed areas of the body are covered, limit time spent outdoors, and pay special attention to the well-being of children and the elderly. Prolonged exposure outdoors may lead to frostbite, so it is essential to follow all safety guidelines.
The weather on January 17-18 will pose a serious test for the entire country. Meteorologists advise keeping an eye on forecasts and ensuring the safety of oneself and loved ones during these frosty days.
