Tesla’s electric vehicle deliveries in the first quarter of 2025 fell to record lows, marking the worst performance for the manufacturer since 2022. According to the Financial Times, the company sold only 336,681 electric vehicles over the three-month period, significantly down from 387,000 vehicles sold in the same period last year.

Challenges in the European Market

The decline in deliveries is largely attributed to negative consumer reactions in Europe to CEO Elon Musk’s actions, as well as fierce competition from Chinese manufacturers like BYD. This manufacturer has once again become the leader in electric vehicle sales, selling 416,388 vehicles in the first quarter of 2025.

Additionally, Tesla has suffered significant losses in the stock market, with the company’s shares dropping by 6.3% during early trading in New York. The publication emphasized that Musk’s influence on European politics has seriously damaged the brand’s image among European consumers, who are facing delays in the delivery of the updated Model Y electric crossover, which has recently gone on sale in the region.

Competition in the Chinese Market

The situation for Tesla is further complicated by the aging product lineup, which has reduced its market share in China. Competition from German automakers, particularly BMW and Volkswagen, is increasing as their models gain popularity among consumers.

“Delays in the delivery of the updated electric crossover are related to the modernization of the Model Y assembly line. Currently, the ramp-up of Model Y production is proceeding successfully,” stated Tesla.
