Rice supplies from Thailand to Middle Eastern countries have been temporarily halted due to the escalation of military conflict in the region. The situation has led to serious complications in maritime logistics, making timely transportation of the product impossible.

Suspension of Shipments and Market Impact

The Honorary President of the Thai Rice Exporters Association, Chukiat Opaswongse, reported that this week two rice-laden vessels were halted at the Port of Bangkok, carrying about 80,000 tons of product destined for Iraq. The entire cargo had to be unloaded, and the rice returned to warehouses due to the impossibility of further transportation.

“Everything has essentially come to a standstill. No new purchases are taking place either, as no one knows what will happen next,” he said.

Strategic Importance of Supplies and Export Forecasts

According to industry data, in 2025, Iraq became the leading importer of rice from Thailand, accounting for 12.7% of the country’s total export volume. The main supply route passes through the Strait of Hormuz, where this week the bulk carrier Mayere Naree was damaged, further complicating logistics.

Analysts expect that in 2026, rice exports from Thailand will decrease by approximately 11%, reaching a seven-year low of around seven million tons. This will mark the lowest figure in the past five years, which could impact the global grain market and lead to price increases in importing countries.
