The Institute of Fisheries, Marine Ecology, and Oceanography has received state-of-the-art equipment funded by the European Union through the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. This is a significant step towards the development of Ukrainian science in the field of fisheries, contributing to the practical strengthening of the country’s scientific base.

Purpose of Equipment Transfer

The updated technical base allows for the resumption of full-fledged field expeditions and ensures modern approaches to managing fish resources. Quality scientific research is necessary for effective monitoring of aquatic biological resources, enabling precise determination of allowable fish catch volumes without harming the ecosystem. This issue is closely related to the economic and environmental aspects of the industry’s development.

Deputy Minister of Economy Taras Vysotsky emphasized the importance of scientific approaches even in the challenging conditions of war. According to him, Ukraine continues to shape a modern fisheries sector focused on transparent management and relying on reliable data rather than outdated practices.

“Reforms must be based on facts, not assumptions or outdated methodologies.”

List of Received Equipment

The list of new equipment includes two research vessels with motors and trailers, which will serve as the foundation for expeditions on water bodies, particularly in large aquatic areas. Additionally, two vehicles have been provided for operational trips to research sites, and a set of modern water analyzers and microscopes will allow for ecological research to be conducted directly on-site, speeding up the acquisition of accurate results and enhancing the effectiveness of scientific work.

European Integration and Strategic Support

International assistance is of strategic importance for reforming Ukraine’s fisheries, bringing it closer to European standards of sustainable development and responsible use of natural resources. This is an important part of Ukraine’s integration into the European Union.

Thanks to the new equipment, scientists will be able to regularly monitor fish populations, the condition of their habitats, and the overall ecological situation in water bodies. The collected data will serve as the basis for scientifically justified catch quotas that align with European practices in managing biological resources.

Note: The Institute of Fisheries, Marine Ecology, and Oceanography is one of Ukraine’s leading scientific institutions in the field of aquatic biological resource research. It conducts comprehensive studies of the Black and Azov Seas, as well as inland waters, and develops recommendations for the rational use of fish stocks.
