The Ukrainian economy has the potential to outpace the Russian economy over the next twenty years – this opinion was expressed by US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent during hearings in Congress. According to him, sustainable economic development in Ukraine will be the most reliable defense against future aggression from the Russian Federation. This position is also supported by US President Donald Trump.

Strengthening the Economy as a National Priority

Scott Bessent emphasized that economic security is an integral part of national security. The Secretary announced initiatives from the Trump administration aimed at launching a joint investment fund for the reconstruction of Ukraine, which is expected to accelerate the country’s economic growth. Additionally, an international conference is scheduled to take place in Rome soon, where issues related to the reconstruction of Ukraine will be discussed.

Countries Involved in Reconstruction and Economic Indicators

Bessent stressed that countries that supported Russia in the war against Ukraine will not be able to participate in the reconstruction process.

“You cannot destroy a country, kill people, ruin lives, and then receive money for its reconstruction,” Bessent noted.

According to the latest data from the World Bank, Ukraine ranked 57th in the world economy rankings in 2023, with its GDP growing by 5.3% to reach 178.8 billion US dollars. In contrast, the economy of the Russian Federation, which amounts to 2.021 trillion dollars, is in 11th place and is 11 times larger than the Ukrainian figure.
