Trump Calls for 50% Tariff on Imports from the EU Starting June 2025

Reasons for High Tariffs
Trump accused the European Union of conducting unfair trade policies towards the United States. In his view, such policies include the imposition of value-added tax (VAT), non-tariff barriers, currency manipulation, as well as penalties for American companies and the initiation of baseless lawsuits against them. According to Trump, these actions result in an annual trade deficit for the United States with the European Union exceeding $250 billion.
“I recommend implementing a direct tariff of 50% on goods from the European Union, starting June 1, 2025. This tariff will not apply to products made or assembled in the United States,” Trump stated.
US-EU Negotiations: Current Situation
In addition to economic arguments, Donald Trump noted that negotiations between the United States and the European Union regarding trade are at an impasse. He described the current state of negotiations as “absolutely unacceptable,” emphasizing the need for decisive action to protect the interests of the American economy.
