Trump May Support Arms Sales to Ukraine If It Benefits the U.S.

Former U.S. Special Representative for Ukraine Kurt Volker expressed the opinion that Donald Trump, a likely candidate for the presidency of the United States, would support the transfer of weapons to Ukraine if this initiative aligns with the interests of the American economy and appears to be a beneficial deal for the U.S.

Trump’s Approach to Military Support
Volker emphasized that for Trump, commercial gain is a priority. In his view, the former president is much more inclined to see the sale of weapons to Ukraine as a business deal rather than as free aid that requires funding from the U.S. budget. This is why Trump may not support the idea of providing free military assistance, but instead consider the possibility of exporting weapons for payment.
“For Trump, the main thing is a profitable deal. If he sees a benefit in it, he will support the sale of weapons. However, he will not want to spend budget funds on aid to Ukraine,” he noted.
Possible Options for Supporting Ukraine
The diplomat believes that an optimal solution could be the passage of a law in the U.S. Congress and Senate that would allow Ukraine to take out loans to purchase American weapons. This way, taxpayer money would not be used, and the Ukrainian side would be able to pay for the supplies independently.
Volker also highlighted the possibility of linking future agreements to economic projects, for example, in the area of mineral resources. According to him, such a scheme would allow Ukraine to pay for weapons, while the funds received would remain in the U.S. economy, aligning with Trump’s business interests.
