In Ukraine, plans are underway to increase childbirth benefits and implement family support

In Ukraine, preparations are being made to increase state assistance for childbirth: the amount for the first child may rise to 50–75 thousand hryvnias, for the second – up to 125 thousand hryvnias, and for the third – up to 175 thousand hryvnias. In addition to increasing financial support, a comprehensive family support system for families with children is being developed.

Details of the initiative and benefit amounts

According to the head of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Finance, Taxation, and Customs Policy, Danilo Hetmantsev (“Servant of the People”), these changes are aimed at combating the demographic crisis and enhancing social protection for children. He emphasized:

“This is an important and timely step for us as a state to not only talk about supporting families but also to take real action.”

Back in 2021, Danilo Hetmantsev submitted a draft law that proposed a significant increase in childbirth benefits: 50,000 hryvnias for the first child, 100,000 hryvnias for the second, and 150,000 hryvnias for the third. The document received support from the relevant committee but was not implemented. Now, taking into account inflation and the growing social needs, the proposed amounts are planned to be increased to 75, 125, and 175 thousand hryvnias, respectively.

Social support for families and future changes

Hetmantsev stressed the importance of a realistic approach: “I am not a supporter of populism. We must offer only what we can truly finance. Not 400 thousand hryvnias on paper, but real programs with clear sources of funding,” he noted.

In addition to one-time payments, the state plans to implement a long-term support system for children and families, which will include projects:

• “eCrèche” – an organization for childcare from an early age;
• “School Starter Pack” – assistance for families in preparing children for school;
• other forms of social support for children until they reach adulthood.

Hetmantsev emphasized a strategic approach, stating: “Our goal is not just to provide money at birth, but to support the child from day one and assist the family at every stage of life.”

The authorities hope that such steps will not only stimulate birth rates but also create an atmosphere of safety and stability for young families.
