The Need to Increase Gas Imports
As a result of massive shelling of Ukrainian energy enterprises by the Russian Federation, Ukraine is compelled to compensate for the energy resource deficit by purchasing expensive gas on the European market. According to information from the energy sector, by the end of the current winter, the country may need over 4 billion cubic meters of additional gas, which at current prices will cost approximately 2 billion US dollars.
Negotiations for International Support
Energy Minister Svitlana Hrynchuk reported that Ukraine is negotiating with international partners to increase natural gas imports by 30%. Additionally, agreements have already been reached for loans from European financial institutions amounting to 800 million euros (930 million US dollars), and the possibility of expanding credit support is also being discussed.
“This is in addition to equipment for repairing facilities that are constantly under fire. Most of this additional import will come from Europe.”
Thus, the energy war between Ukraine and the Russian Federation is causing significant losses to both sides, and for Ukraine, this means an increased dependence on European gas and the need to attract additional financial resources to ensure energy security.
