From January to October 2025, Ukraine imported goods worth $67.8 billion, while exports amounted to only $33.2 billion. According to the State Customs Service, the country’s trade turnover increased by 10% compared to the same period last year, reaching nearly $101 billion, whereas in 2024 this figure was $92 billion.

Main Suppliers and Import Structure

The leading supplier countries remain China ($15.1 billion), Poland ($6.4 billion), and Germany ($5.4 billion). The main import categories include machinery and equipment, chemical products, as well as fuel and energy goods. At the same time, the largest amount of Ukrainian products is exported to Poland ($4.2 billion), Turkey ($2.2 billion), and Germany ($2 billion).

Reasons for the Increase in Trade Deficit

According to the National Bank of Ukraine, the current account deficit during the full-scale war has significantly increased, reaching $34.6 billion, which is 50% more than last year. The main reason for this gap is the substantial increase in investments in security and the country’s recovery. In particular, imports of machinery products rose by 36% year-on-year over the three quarters of 2025, driven by the needs of the defense sector. There was also an increase in the volume of energy resource purchases in response to intense attacks on energy infrastructure, as well as various equipment for weapon production.

At the same time, consumer imports grew more slowly—by only 8% over the first eight months of 2025, and its share in total imports gradually decreased.

“The current account deficit has a fundamental source of financing: funds from international partners,” the NBU explained, emphasizing that these funds are essentially investments in our common European security.
