Seafood is traditionally considered an important component of a healthy diet due to its high protein content, Omega-3 fatty acids, and other beneficial elements. However, not all seafood is equally safe: some can pose health risks due to the accumulation of harmful substances.

Problematic Types of Seafood

  • Farmed Shrimp. While shrimp remain popular among Ukrainian consumers, their “freshness” and appealing appearance do not always guarantee quality. During farming, antibiotics and pesticides are often used, and mass production contributes to the accumulation of toxins in the meat.
  • Swordfish and Shark. Large predatory fish, such as swordfish and shark, can accumulate mercury in their tissues. This dangerous metal negatively affects the human nervous system, and regular consumption of such fish increases health risks.
  • Mussels and Oysters from Polluted Waters. Since these mollusks filter seawater, toxins, bacteria, and heavy metals can concentrate in their meat. Specimens caught in polluted waters are particularly dangerous, as their consumption can provoke serious illnesses.
  • Crab Sticks. A popular product that often has little in common with natural crab meat. Crab sticks often contain artificial colorings, preservatives, and a high amount of salt, which negatively affects the body with regular consumption.
  • Tuna. Canned tuna is in high demand; however, its meat can also contain mercury. Additionally, some species of tuna are threatened with extinction due to uncontrolled fishing.

Health Risks and Recommendations

Regular consumption of seafood with high levels of toxic substances can lead to body intoxication, allergic reactions, digestive disorders, and nervous system problems. Over time, the accumulation of heavy metals increases the likelihood of developing oncological and neurological diseases.

Mollusks filter seawater, so their meat easily accumulates toxins, bacteria, and heavy metals. Those collected from polluted waters are particularly dangerous — their consumption can cause serious health issues.

To reduce risks, experts recommend choosing seafood from verified sources, paying attention to information about the catch location, and avoiding regular consumption of products prone to accumulating harmful substances.
