Chinese antitrust authorities have officially approved the $8.2 billion deal in which Bunge Global will acquire Viterra, backed by Glencore Plc. This decision removes the last significant obstacle to completing the large-scale deal in the agricultural sector.

Impact of the Deal on the Global Agricultural Market

The merger was announced nearly two years ago. Approval from China allows Bunge to finalize the acquisition process, significantly strengthening its position in the global agricultural market. With Viterra’s extensive infrastructure, including a network of elevators, port terminals, and a fleet of vessels, Bunge will greatly expand its logistics capabilities for exporting wheat, corn, and soybeans. This will help the company compete more effectively with giants like Cargill Inc. and Archer-Daniels-Midland Co. (ADM).

“This is an extremely necessary victory for Bunge, as it will help cope with the significant decline in profits in the industry. Viterra’s vast network of warehouses, port terminals, and vessels will greatly enhance its ability to supply wheat, corn, and soybeans worldwide, allowing it to compete with major rivals like Cargill Inc. and Chicago’s Archer-Daniels-Midland Co (ADM).”

Details of the Deal and Regulatory Aspects

Following this news, Bunge’s shares rose by 8.6% on the New York Stock Exchange, also boosted by the U.S. government’s plans to increase biofuel quotas. Bunge’s headquarters is located in St. Louis, Missouri. Initially, the company planned to complete the deal by mid-2024, but the process has been delayed due to trade tensions between the U.S. and China.

Bunge has already received key approvals from regulators in the European Union and Canada, who had previously expressed concerns about the potential impact of the deal on competition. Meanwhile, Argentina still needs to make the relevant decisions, but the country’s current antitrust legislation allows the operation to proceed, with possible further adjustments.

Today, Bunge remains the second most significant company in the so-called ABCD quartet—a group of leading global agricultural traders that have a substantial influence on global crop markets.
